Dr. William Francis Maguire, Sr., M.D., 94, passed away on November 28, 2018, at Roper Hospital.

The relatives and friends of Dr. and Mrs. William F. Maguire, Sr. are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:30 AM, Monday, December 3, 2018, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends between 4:00 and 6:00 PM on Sunday afternoon at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy.

The son of Dr. Daniel Maguire and Ella Carter Maguire, Dr. Maguire was born on August 8, 1924, and was raised in downtown Charleston. He attended Cathedral Grammar School, Bishop England High School, the College of Charleston and MUSC.

He served two years as a physician in the US Army, including one year in a field hospital in Korea. He was discharged as a captain, one of his proudest achievements.

A devoted physician of internal medicine, he practiced in Charleston for 41 years. Those years included working alongside his brothers, Dr. Daniel Maguire, Jr. and Dr. Carter Maguire, and also his aunt, Dr. Patricia Carter. In his final six years of practice, he worked with his son, Dr. William Maguire, Jr.

He was a member of the Charleston County Medical Society, SC Medical Association, the Southern Medical Association, and the AMA. He served for a time as Chief of the Department of Medicine and Chairman of the Credentialing Committee at St. Francis Xavier Hospital.

A devout Catholic, he was long-time parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Church. He was a lifelong golfer and played until recently at his beloved Charleston “Muni”. Having played basketball at Bishop England and College of Charleston, he enjoyed watching sports of all kinds, especially Notre Dame Football. He also was an avid chess player. He liked travelling, and took his family on many trips through the years. A genuinely happy, kind, and good-natured man, he truly loved his family, his church, the medical profession, and his city and country.

He was a devoted husband to Dorothy Bennett Maguire for 70 years, and is survived by her and his two children, Susan E. Maguire and William F. Maguire, Jr., MD. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, previously mentioned, and his sister, Mary Frances Maguire Storen. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and their families.
