William Barrett Lawrence, 85, born on April 4, 1940, in Dallas, Texas, passed away peacefully from natural causes with his wife by his side on June 13, 2025. He resided in Charleston, South Carolina at the time of his passing.
William enjoyed a distinguished career in commercial real estate, serving as an Executive Vice President and Partner at esteemed firms, including Equitable Real Estate and Fox & Carskadon Syndication Co. in San Mateo, California, and The Espy Company in Atlanta. His professional journey was marked by determination and success, culminating in becoming a partner in his California firm, a significant milestone in his career.
Beyond his professional endeavors, William was a man of many passions. He had a keen interest in politics and was an avid follower of various sports. Snow skiing in Aspen with cherished longtime friends and golf were among his favorite pastimes, allowing him to enjoy the great outdoors and stay active. His routine often included reading the daily newspaper, a habit that kept him informed and engaged with current events. Travel and whiskey also brought him joy, complementing his well-rounded approach to life.
William will be remembered as a good friend, known for his kind heart and ability to make others laugh. He possessed a sharp intellect, demonstrating both wit and wisdom throughout his life, and he faced challenges with remarkable toughness. His love for his pets was evident, as they brought him much comfort and joy.
He is survived by his beloved spouse, Irene Lawrence; his sons, Scott and Stephen Lawrence; his sister, Sue Ellen Staub; and his cousin, Helen Burgdorf.
In honor of William's life, a funeral service will be held at the James A. McAlister Chapel on June 21, 2025, at 3:00 PM. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
William Barrett Lawrence leaves behind a legacy of kindness, humor, and unyielding strength. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
William was preceded in death by his parents, Louie and Ruth Lawrence, and his beloved daughter Sarah Lawrence.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made in Bill's honor to St. Jude Children's Hospital .
