William Charles Lane

Entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, May 11, 2010, Mr. William Charles Lane, husband of Birgit Berg Lane, of Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. William C. Lane are invited to attend his Mass of Christian burial at 10:00 AM, Friday, May 14, 2010, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal will be at 1:30 PM Friday at Beaufort National Cemetery. Friends may call at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home 1620 Savannah Hwy. on Thursday evening between 6:00 and 8:00 PM. The Rosary will be recited at 7:30 PM. William Charles Lane was born in Tickle Cove, Newfoundland on September 15, 1917, a son of Charles William and Elizabeth Long Lane. He attended Catholic schools in Brooklyn, NY and honorably served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. During World War II he was stationed in Norwich, England and flew as a navigator. His aircraft became damaged by enemy ground fire while on a mission and was unable to return to England. The crew safely landed the B-24 in Sweden, while they were interned in a neutral country. While in Sweden he met his bride, Birgit, and began a sixty-five year romance . Mr. Lane is survived by his wife, Birgit Berg Lane, Children: Christine Lane Leonardi wife of, Rick Leonardi, Dr. Charles William Lane and his wife, Dr. Holly Lane, William F. Lane, Robert A.
