William Jay Hewitt

William J. Hewitt, 78, passed away June 16, 2020, after battling cancer in a North Carolina nursing home. He has returned home to Charleston, SC where he wanted to be for so long. A graveside funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, June 19, 2020, at Live Oak Memorial Gardens.

Jay was born November 1, 1941, in Whiteville, NC-Columbus County. He was the youngest son of the late Sadie Lee Hewitt who he adored until his last breath and his father, Dewey Garland Hewitt. He is predeceased by seven siblings, Dewey Hewitt, Joseph Hewitt, Gertrude Mills, Agnes Hilburn, Charles Hewitt, Pearlie May Faircloth and Emma Ann Montgomery. He had five children; the late Bill (Delene) Hewitt, David Hewitt, Tim Hewitt, Debbie Hewitt and Lori Hewitt, all from Wisconsin.

Jay enjoyed his profession as a long-distance truck driver. Upon his retirement he enjoyed traveling, fishing and camping that he often did with his youngest sister. He followed his loving brother in law, CB and youngest sister, Ann wherever the Navy moved them just to be close to them. They were always there for each other and his 3 nieces who loved him dearly, Cheryl, Debbie and Wanda. We will miss his “squeezing” hugs and long talks.
