Captain William D. Heidtman Jr, 73, widower of Rita Skinner Heidtman, passed away Monday, November 4, 2013. A native of Charleston, he was born November 3, 1940, the son of William D. and Nora Moore Heidtman. A graduate of James Island High School, Mr. Heidtman was involved in the Boy Scouts of America, the Charleston Fire Department, Sears Department Store, and the March of Dimes. A loving husband and devoted father, William worked two jobs to provide for his family so Rita would be able to take care of their children without having to work. Passionate for nature, Mr. Heidtman's farming roots fostered his love for peppers, including a variety of pepper products he shared with friends and family. From an early age, his grandsons learn to share his love of peppers. He also nurtured a "car-stopping" rose garden that brought him much joy. In addition to his loving family, Captain Heidtman's greatest legacy was starting the "fireman's boot" campaign to help a fellow fireman's daughter. Through this effort Captain Heidtman became deeply involved with the March of Dimes. As a Boy Scout leader, he was affectionately known as "Wooley", and helped mentor countless young men, including his sons, to the rank of Eagle Scout. Captain Heidtman will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Survivors include his three children, William D. III, Michael A. and Laura L. Heidtman, 3 Grandsons: Christopher M., Tyler A. and Matthew A. Heidtman. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Rita Skinner Heidtman. The relatives and friends of Captain William D. Heidtman are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM, Thursday, November 7, 2013, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rite of Commital will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
