Charleston, SC - FERRELL, William Legare, age 81, and husband of Beatrice Shirley Johnson Ferrell, passed away Friday, September 14, 2012. A native of Charleston, South Carolina, he was the son of the late William R. Ferrell and Mattie Sweatman Ferrell Knight. Mr. Ferrell worked hard all of his life, and was a true American who joined the United States Marine Corps while still a teenager. After service to the Marines, he served his country faithfully until his retirement from the Merchant Marine. Until recently he worked as a Boiler Operator with the College of Charleston. He was a past member of both the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 147 on James Island. Among his many hobbies, Mr. Ferrell especially enjoyed hunting and fishing. A loving family man, Mr. Ferrell spent 51 wonderful years married to Beatrice "Shirley" Johnson Ferrell, who survives. Also surviving are his five grandchildren: William L. Ferrell, III, Ashley Fries and husband Troy, Tiffany Miller and husband Matthew, Gregory Ferrell and wife Ashley, and Elaine Tumbleston; 3 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Ferrell was preceded in death by his daughter Cathy Britt and son William L. Ferrell, Jr., and his brother Edward Way. The relatives and friends of William L. and Beatrice Shirley Ferrell are invited to attend the funeral service for the former at 2:00 PM Tuesday, September 18, 2012, from the chapel of James A. McAlister Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Monday evening between 5:00 and 7:00 PM. Burial will be at Riverview Memorial Park on Azalea Drive in North Charleston.
