William (Bill) Boner was born in Spokane, Washington, on August 7, 1935 to parents Katherine Beck and Howard Boner, and he passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, in Charleston, South Carolina. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy of love and dedication to his family, friends, and work.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 AM, Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 5 St. Teresa Drive, Charleston. The Rite of Committal will follow at Live Oak Memorial Gardens, 3093 Ashley River Road. The family will receive friends between 5:00 and 7:00 PM, Tuesday evening, at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway. The Rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM.
Bill was a devoted husband to Jean and a caring father to Kathi (Michael) Smith and Pam (Tim) Price. He took great pride in being a grandfather to Michael (Rachel), Daniel (Kevin), Christopher (Katie), Matthew (Carolyn), Bianca (Jett), TJ, Faith (Trent), and Hunter, and was an adoring great-grandfather to Amy, Reese, Kenzie, Kayson, Brooke, and Landon. He cherished his four brothers, Richard, Lou, Jim, and Jerry and had a special place in his heart for close friends Catherine and Reuben Martin.
Bill is survived by his wife, all of his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his brothers Lou and Richard. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Jim and Jerry.
A proud Navy veteran, Bill served honorably as a Seaman aboard the minesweeper USS Observer (MSO 461). After his service, he became a master mechanic at Rick Hendrick Dodge and enjoyed working on cars in his home garage. He was a member of the Elks Lodge 242 where he volunteered at BINGO, and he spent time volunteering at the VA hospital in downtown Charleston. His other passions included collecting hats and model cars, playing with model trains, and making new friends. Yet, his greatest joy came from spending time with loved ones, often serenading them with songs and sharing his clever catchphrases.
Bill's warm, friendly spirit and unwavering support will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
The family would like to mention that in memory of Bill, flowers can be sent to the funeral home and donations can be sent to St Vincent de Paul at 5 St Teresa Dr, Charleston, SC 29407.
As Bill would say, “don’t take no wooden nickels.”
