Walter Francis LaTorre, husband of Azalia Richter LaTorre, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, April 22, 2018, after a brief illness, with his family by his side. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Walter F. LaTorre are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial at 1:00 PM Wednesday, April 25, 2018, at Nativity Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal will follow at Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy. this Tuesday evening between 5:00 and 8:00 PM.
Walter was born on April 27, 1936, in Charleston, SC a son of John J. LaTorre and Margaret McDonald LaTorre. Walter was a devout Catholic and attended Blessed Sacrament and Nativity Churches. He attended St. Joseph's Grammar School, graduated from Bishop England High School in 1956, and went on to attend the University of South Carolina where he played football for one year.
Walter retired from Westvaco after 40 years in the Finishing and Shipping Department. After retirement, he was a part-time driver for Hertz Rental Cars.
Walter was an avid sports fan and coached Bishop England High School football for 25 years. He also was a basketball official for high school and major college games. Walter was inducted into the Bishop England Athletic Hall of Fame in 1974. He was also inducted into the SC High School League Basketball Officials Hall of Fame. Walter loved the Carolina Gamecocks and was a member of the Gamecock Club for many years. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and a member of and past president of Meridian Place HOA.
Walter loved to talk, fish, watch football, golf and travel. He was an avid fan of his 18 grandchildren and whatever they were involved in. His nicknames were Papa, Coach, Walla and Little Lip.
Walter was predeceased by his daughter, Karen, and his brother, Michael. He is survived by his wife, Azalia; his children: Bubba LaTorre (Teresa), Kristin Molony (Kevin), and Cindy Fowler (John); his brothers, John LaTorre and Joe LaTorre; 5 stepchildren, Robert Condon, Kelley Skarp (Kevin), Cheryl Bloodworth, Shannon Alexander and Kevin Condon (Jenn); 18 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
