Vincent E. Hoover, Jr., late husband of Martha Jones Hoover, passed away in Charleston, SC, upon completion of his earthly mission on May 18, 2026.
His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 AM, Saturday, May 23, 2026, at St. Benedict Catholic Church, 950 Darrell Creek Trail, Mt. Pleasant. The Rite of Committal will follow at the St. Benedict Columbarium.
Vincent was born in Columbia, SC, on February 13, 1946, the youngest child and only son of Vincent E. Hoover and Sally Louise Brown. He was married to Martha Stewart Jones in 1963 and they celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary in August 2025. He was a graduate of AC Flora High School and attended Richland Technical Education Center (now Midlands Technical College) for two years in Columbia. In 1966, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served as a corporal with the 2nd Marine Division in Vietnam from 1966 to 1968. Subsequently, he served in the US Marine Corps Reserve from 1968 to 1972.
Upon his return from Vietnam and an honorable discharge from active duty, Vincent began his career as a computer programmer for Hoechst, a German chemical company investing in the Spartanburg textile industry. In 1973, Vincent and Martha moved to Isle of Palms with their first daughter, Ashley, and he continued his career with the SC State Ports Authority through the 1970's. He would then go on to join the private sector and spend the next 20 years leading and building a group of international businesses specializing in the textile and clothing industries. In the early 1990's, Vincent began another successful career, in the screen-printing business, operating The Hoove Group until his retirement in 2019.
It was during his 25 years on the "old" Isle of Palms that Vince became a most regular presence at various institutions throughout East Cooper including the Windjammer, the VFW, the IOP Rec Department, IOP Beach & Racquet, etc. For decades, he spent countless hours on the water - fishing, shrimping and boating with family and friends, particularly between Sullivan's Island and Bull's Bay. He could also often be found at the Center Street ballfields in Mt. Pleasant, where he volunteered as a little league baseball coach for 15 years.
Vincent was happiest just being surrounded by his family. He leaves behind his wife, Martha; one daughter, Ashley H. Bolchoz (Mark); two sons, Vincent E. "Tripp" Hoover III (Kristy) and William Sunday "Trampus" Hoover as well as nine grandchildren: Emily Bolchoz Raines (Nick), Mark Bolchoz, Jr. (Ariana), Elizabeth Bolchoz Sanford (Ross), Vincent Bolchoz, Manning Bolchoz; and Andrew, Eliza, Caroline and Grace Hoover. He is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren and his sister, Cynthia Amick. He was predeceased by his parents; an infant son, Tre; and a sister, Betty Ramsey.
For those who knew Vincent, they are not surprised by the fact that he received a lung transplant at the Medical University of South Carolina at the relatively older age of 73, then beat the odds and survived for nearly seven years, enjoying life to the end.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Vincent De Paul Society (St. Benedict Church) or the St. Clare Home of Joyful Hope (Charleston Diocese).
