Vermelle Deterville

October 27, 1950 — March 26, 2013

Vermelle E. Deterville, being of uplifting mind and spiritually unconstrained body, departed from all worldly matters on Tuesday March 26, 2013 at the age of 62 from the Medical University of South Carolina as a result of her long traveled but finished journey. Vermelle E. Deterville entered this world on October 27, 1950 in historic downtown Charleston, S.C. To her most cherishing mother Vermelle J.H. Browne (deceased) and father Edward U. Hazel (deceased). Vermelle was one of three children (brother) Joseph Hemingway and (brother) St. Anthony R. Hazel. Vermelle acquired a masterful education from Bishop McDonnell Catholic school and upon her graduation, she went directly to Brooklyn Jewish Nursing school. Following, Vermelle began working at Brooklyn Jewish Hospital in the department of pediatrics. In 1971 she gave birth to her daughter Vanessa F. Lewis (41 y.o.) and 39 years ago on February 8, 1974, Vermelle married Cuthbert Deterville. Following they had a son, Jean-Paul Deterville (38 y.o.) Her husband Cuthbert, affectionately called Bert, was more than a husband and friend to Vermelle and was also a caregiver to her until the very end while displaying unconditional love. They resided in New York until 1985, upon returning to Charleston, South Carolina. Vermelle was blessed with a granddaughter (Vanessa Lauren-Taylor Green (17)) by her oldest child and blessed with two grandsons (Devario C. Reid Deterville (19) and DeJean Joseph Deterville (9)). Oh God her help from ages past and her family's help for years to come, Vermelle was more than just a wife, mother, nurse and a friend. She was the best, she was a loving woman that cared for everyone which in turn strengthened others' care for her.
