Susan Marguerite Croft Burn, widow of John Furlong Burn, died November 3, 2012. Polly, as she was known, was born October 19, 1921 in Hilda, South Carolina to William Grady Croft and Lula Mae Dyches Croft. A love of caring for people sent her on her career path of nursing. She attended nursing school at Baptist Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina, The Institute of Psychiatry Hartford, Connecticut and graduated from St. Francis Xavier Infirmary Teaching School of Nursing in 1945 with her RN degree. Polly was head nurse at the Florence Crittenden Home in Charleston. From there she went to work as a nursing supervisor at Roper Hospital under the guidance of Irene Dixon. The remaining more than 25 years were spent at St. Francis Hospital as three to eleven supervisor and floor nurse until her retirement in 1986. She had a lifelong love of baseball, both playing it and watching her Atlanta Braves. Polly is the mother of two daughters, Susan B. Cousins (Donnie Flood) and Beth Cecil (Tony). She has one grandson, William P. Gwynette, Jr. (Val) and one great granddaughter, Brooke Gwynnette. She was predeceased in death by her sister Lela Mae Riding and brothers Grady Croft and Charles E. Croft. She will be greatly missed by her daughters, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. The relatives and friends of Susan C. Burn are invited to attend her Funeral Service at 10:30 AM Thursday, November 8, 2012, at the James A. McAlister Chapel, 1620 Savannah Hwy. Burial will be at St. Lawrence Cemetery. The family will receive friends this Wednesday evening between 6:00 and 8:00 PM at the funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project 7020 AC Skinner Pkwy, Suite 100 Jacksonville, FL 32256 or Charleston Animal Society 2455 Remount Road North Charleston, SC 29406.
