Sumner Stanford Carlon, Jr., 84, passed away on May 2, 2010 in Charleston, SC. He is survived by his beloved wife of 22 years, Evelyn Marie Luther Maloney Carlon. He is also survived by two sons, three daughters and their families, Timothy Carlon (Karen) of Rapid City, SD; Richard M. Maloney (Amy) of Greenville, SC; Elaine Jenkins (Kevin) of Goose Creek, SC; Cynthia Maloney (Jimmy) of Summerville, SC; and Kathryn Carlon Marsh (Charles) of Waldorf, MD, ten grandchildren, Michelle Emmons and her husband John, Mathew Carlon, Timothy Furlnong, Andrea Jenkins, Stephanie Marsh, Abigail Jenkins, Bridgette West, C.J. Marsh, Jospeh Maloney and Ryan Maloney; three great grandchildren, Daniel, Jacob and Kaylee Emmons. Mr. Carlon was born in Bridgewater, PA to the late Sumner Carlon, Sr., and Hazelle Carothers. He was preceded in death by his first wife Wilma Jeanne Brickner. Mr. Carlon graduated from Beaver High School in Beaver, PA in 1943. He was a certified lifeguard and instructor, Cub Scout master and trail master, American Legion member in Monaca, PA, a member of the Windy Ghoul Gun Club and PA State Champion sharpshooter after having won numerous previous awards. For years, he was a member of the Ft. Macintosh re-enactment group in Beaver, PA. Mr. Carlon was also a volunteer with the Charleston Riverdogs. He was a decorated veteran of the 86th Infantry, 10th Mountain Division, during World War II, having received the Infantryman's Combat Badge, the Purple Heart, the Good Conduct medal, and four battle stars. The family of Mr. Sumner S. Carlon will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Wednesday, May, 5, 2010 at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy. Charleston. No other services are scheduled in Charleston. In lieu of flowers please consider memorial contribution to VFW Operation Uplink c/o VFW Post 445, 1639 Camp Rd. Charleston, SC 29412.
