Stephen Thomas Schachte, 70, of Charleston, SC, died unexpectedly Tuesday, April 4, 2017. The relatives and friends of Stephen Thomas Schachte are invited to attend a Service of Remembrance at 2:00 PM, Sunday, April 9, 2017, at South Carolina Society Hall, 72 Meeting Street. A reception will follow at Hibernian Hall, 105 Meeting Street. Stephen Thomas Schachte was born on January 30th, 1947, in Charleston, South Carolina, the second son of John Edwin Schachte, Jr. and Anne Thorne Schachte. He graduated from Gaud School, the University of Virginia and the University of South Carolina School of Law. He was mentored by and shared law offices with the lawyers of Legare, Hare and Smith for over forty years. He was predeceased by his parents and his wife of 34 years, Lucinda Patton Schachte. He is survived by his daughter, Emily Susannah Schachte, of San Cristobal, Mexico; his son, Thomas Edwin Patton Schachte, of New Orleans, Louisiana; his brother, John Edwin Schachte III, husband of Margaret N. Schachte, three nephews and six nieces. He was a member of the Hibernian Society, the German Friendly Society, a member and past president of the Lions Club of Charleston, and a member and former Steward of the South Carolina Society. A former member of the Country Club of Charleston, he was a two-time winner of the Member-Member Golf Tournament. An avid historian and sailing enthusiast, he was known for his quick wit and the dimensions of his laughter. He was constant in his character and friendship, and a natural gentleman who celebrated nature and his time in the outdoors. Gone too soon and sadly missed, his journey over, may he now rest in peace. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the South Carolina Society Hall Fund, 72 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC 29401.
