Sister M. Marcella Zwingmann, a Sister of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy, died at May Forest Motherhouse, on August 13, 2012. Sr. Marcella, formerly Rosalie Charlotte Zwingmann, was born in Charleston on August 31, 1918 to John A. and Marie E. Jones Zwingmann. A graduate of Bishop England High School, Charleston, SC, she received a BA degree from the College of Notre Dame, Baltimore, MD; a MA in French from the Catholic University, Washington, DC; and a MS degree in Guidance from Creighton University in Omaha, NE. Sister Marcella was awarded NDEA Grants for graduate study at St. Teresa/St. Mary College, Winona, Minnesota and Universite Catholique in Paris, France, and was chosen for a Second Level Institute at Toulouse, France sponsored by Clemson University. Sister Marcella and attended graduate classes at The Citadel in Charleston, the University of South Carolina-Aiken, SC, as well as at Loyola University, New Orleans, and Sacred Heart College, Belmont, NC. Sister Marcella entered the convent on June 15, 1936 and professed her vows on February 2, 1939. A professional educator, Sr. Marcella taught in Cathedral School and St. Patrick's School in Charleston, SC as well as St. Mary's School in Greenville, SC. Sister also served as a teacher of Latin and French, Dean of Girls and Chairperson of the Language department at Bishop England High School. She was instrumental in establishing a chapter of the National Honor Society at BEHS. She also served as principal, teacher, and guidance counselor of St. Angela Academy, Aiken, SC and principal of St. Anne's School, Sumter, SC. From 1974 to 1977, Sister Marcella was a teacher and guidance director at Trident Academy, Mt. Pleasant, SC. Sister Marcella was Director of the OLM Associate Program from 1990 to 2007. In retirement, Sister Marcella was an active participant in the prayer ministry of the Motherhouse community of the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy. Sister Marcella was a member of many professional organizations and received a numerous awards for her contributions in education. Sister Marcella is survived by a nephew, and several nieces and her Sisters in community, the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy. Friends are invited to call at the Motherhouse, 424 Fort Johnson Rd. James Island, SC on Friday, August 17 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. A Vigil Service will be held at the Motherhouse on Friday, August 17 at 7:00 PM. The Mass of Christian burial will be held at May Forest, Motherhouse Chapel on Saturday, August 18 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Our Lady of Mercy Community Outreach Center, PO Box 607, Johns Island, SC 29457. The Rite of Committal will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
