The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 AM. One of Sandy’s last wishes was a celebration of her life at the Charleston Rifle Club, which will be held at a later date.
Sandy was born February 1, 1941 in Charleston, SC, the daughter of Barbara Ruth Rourk Thweatt and John Pershing Singletary, and the sister of Barbara Diane Caruso, all of whom predeceased her. She graduated from Murray Vocational School in 1959. She worked as a banker for over 20 years, and retired from BB&T.
Sandy married Ronald E. Smith in 1960. They were married for 25 years and had 2 children together. In 1961, Sandy became a mother, which she considered her greatest blessing. She was a devoted mother to her 2 beautiful children, Rhonda Kay Smith and Teresa Smith LaTorre. She spent most of her time creating lasting memories with them.
In 1996, Sandy started going steady with the love of her life, Ronald “Ron” T. Nolte of Summerville, SC. Together, they went on 22 cruises around the world. When they weren’t cruising the sea, Sandy and Ron spent most of their time at the Charleston Rifle Club bowling or shagging to beach music, enjoying each other’s company. They were each other’s greatest companion. Sandy was a member of the Charleston Shag Club for many years as well as a volunteer at the Rifle Club, where she helped organize and schedule the entertainment.
In her early years, Sandy’s favorite thing to do was dance and roller skate. She also loved to spend time outdoors with her family riding dirt bikes and on the water fishing and water skiing. Throughout her later years, Sandy loved spending time with her family and furbabies. In addition to her 2 daughters, she was a proud grandmother to her 2 grandchildren, Matthew and Megan LaTorre. She helped raise them as children and was known as their beloved “Mama.” Sandy will always be remembered for her heart of gold. She was kind, loving, faithful, and generous. She was an avid supporter of Easterseals and the Lowcountry Food Bank.
