Roy Eugene Mevers III passed away unexpectedly of a massive stroke on Monday, August 7, 2023, in El Reno, OK at the age of 69. He was vacationing with his partner, Charmaine Lanum.
Gene is predeceased by his parents, Roy (Sonny) Eugene Mevers, Jr. and Barbara (Jean) Ellsworth Davis and his former wife, Meredith (Mimi) Van Atten Mevers. Gene is survived by his three children, Roy Eugene Mevers IV and his wife, Margaret Hood Mevers of Miami Shores, FL, Benjamin Lee Mevers of Charleston, SC and Margaret Elizabeth Mevers and her husband, Christopher Haycook of Shrewsbury, MA; two grandchildren, Roy Eugene Mevers V (Beau) and Emma Grace Mevers; his brother; William (Billy) Ellsworth Mevers and his wife, Sue Klump Mevers; and his former spouses, Jessie Jacques Mevers and Elizabeth Driggers Mevers.
Gene was born October 19, 1953, in Charleston, SC. He attended Bishop England High School and the University of South Carolina. He owned the Mevers Company where he specialized in historic renovations.
Gene was bigger than life and embraced living to the fullest. He enjoyed many hobbies including sailing, boating, fly fishing, hunting, traveling, cooking, art and music. Gene enjoyed being on the water from a very early age and was a member of the Hobcaw Yacht Club. The Charleston Christmas Boat Parade will miss Gene’s creative and award-winning bedazzled entries. As an active sportsman, Gene founded the Fair Chase Hunt Club where he shared his love of deer and turkey hunts over many seasons.
Spending time with his family was paramount to Gene. His family enjoyed decades of summers at Sullivan’s Island, where Gene’s collards and green beans often upstaged the main course! He passed on his love of the water to his children and grandchildren. Nothing gave Gene more joy than a gathering of family or friends over a shared interest even if that interest was simply one another. Gene valued his long-standing friendships and was a longtime friend of Bill W.
The family will receive friends between 5:00 and 7:00 PM, Friday August 18, 2023, at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy, Charleston.
