Ronald Raymond DeWitt, 80, husband of Shirley Zacharias Burk-DeWitt, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, December 5, 2018. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald R. DeWitt are invited to attend his Liturgy 2:00 PM, Saturday, December 8, 2018, at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 1393 Miles Drive, Charleston. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, with a Reception immediately following the burial in Layman's Hall at the church. The family will receive friends between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM Friday evening at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy.
Ron was born on June 30, 1938, in Charleston SC, a son of Malcolm S. DeWitt II and Leona E. DeWitt. Ron graduated from Charleston High School in 1956. He was a spectacular athlete lettering in Baseball, Football and Boxing. He was mostly known for his exceptional talent as a Boxer and was offered a scholarship to LSU for boxing but chose to remain in Charleston and pursue other interests. He was a devoted Christian, regularly assuring friends and family of his faith. Ron retired from the United States Postal Service after 30 years as a Letter Carrier. Ron loved to fish, attend sporting events, watch good programs on television and travel to visit his children and grandchildren. He was an avid fan of his 3 children and 7 grandchildren and was best known for his quick wit and joke telling.
Ron was predeceased by his wife of over 42 years, Lorraine Subzda DeWitt, and his 3 brothers Malcolm (Mac), Robert (Bobby), and Kenneth (Kenny). He is survived by his wife, Shirley; his children: Donna Wilson (Steve), Ronald DeWitt, Jr. (Twila), Darrell DeWitt (Tiffany); 2 stepchildren, Billy Burk (Pam), Jimmy Burk (Michelle); 7 grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild and 1 step-great-grandchild.
