Mr. Robert R. Horner, Jr., a retired Assistant Vice President with AT & T, died on Sunday, September 18, 2011 at the age of 87. Mr. Horner was born on October 23, 1923 in Roanoke, Virginia to the late Fina and Robert R. Horner, Sr. He was a 1942 graduate of Jefferson High School and a 1946 graduate of the United States Naval Academy. Mr. Horner was a First Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, serving in both World War ll and Korea. He served as Commanding Officer of the Marine Guard Detachment at the American Consulate in Jerusalem, Palestine at the time of the creation of the state of Isreal. Mr. Horner began his employment with the telephone company in 1949, holding various executive positions until retiring in 1982 as Vice President of Federal Government Communications in Washington, DC. He retired to his hometown of Roanoke, Virginia until moving to Charleston, South Carolina in 2007 to be closer to his daughter and son-in-law. A life long Methodist, he was a member of Woodlawn United Methodist Church in Roanoke, Virginia.
