Robert Eugene Coleman was born in Charleston, SC on November 29, 1946, the son of Henry A Coleman, Sr. and Alice Ellen Brue Coleman. He attended Moultrie High School and finished his education in Seattle, Washington. Robert began his mechanical career at the age of 12 when he built his first engine, which led to his career as a master mechanic. He could work on anything - and did: motorcycles, cars, boats, go-karts, heavy equipment, race cars, but his favorite was old car restoration, especially Model A & Model T Fords. He established his business, Coleman’s Antique Auto, based on these.
Robert was a past member of MARC, MAFCA, Lowcountry Model A Ford club, Model T Ford club, AACA, and Sons of Confederate Veterans Secession Camp 4. He was a 32nd degree Mason in St. Andrew’s Lodge 367 AFM and a Shriner.
He loved spending time with his family and going on impromptu road trips. He also enjoyed drag racing, cooking, fishing, and bluegrass music (he even played guitar and mandolin for his own enjoyment, never in public). When he was no longer able to pursue his favorite interests, he enjoyed the birds, flowers & wildlife in our back yard, as well as the boats traveling on the river.
After suffering with severe health issues, his health declined drastically this year and he died peacefully at home surrounded by his family.
Robert is survived by his wife of 50+ years, Yvonne McLaughlin Coleman; his daughter, Alice Irene Coleman and his grandson, Jonathan Lee Nabors; a brother, Henry A Coleman, Jr. (Cheri) and a sister, Caroline C. Irvine (Gary). He was preceded in death by his parents.
The Funeral Service will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Shriner’s Hospital, or Roper-St. Francis Hospice.
