Rita Catherine Murray, 66, of North Charleston, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on December 10, 2025, from natural causes. Born on February 25, 1959, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Rita was a loving wife to Steve Mislan and a devoted mother to her children. She cherished her family deeply and took great joy in cooking for holidays and family gatherings, always making sure to create memorable meals that brought everyone together.
Rita worked as an Emergency Medical Technician, known for her dedication and compassionate care. She was proud to have served in various capacities at companies such as Pendarvis, American Heritage, and Personal Care, where she made a lasting impact on her colleagues and patients alike. Outside of her work, Rita was actively involved in her community, serving as the Catholic Religious Education Coordinator for the Charleston AFB Catholic Chapel, where her passion for guiding youth was evident.
An avid lover of the outdoors, Rita enjoyed camping and hiking, always eager to explore new trails. She was also a dedicated sports grandma, often found cheering loudly and passionately at her grandsons' football games-she could be pretty tough on the referees! Rita's spirit and love for life touched everyone around her.
Rita is survived by her husband, Steve Mislan; daughter Roberta Whetsel, son-in-law John Whetsel; grandsons John F., Jack, and Jacob Whetsel; son Corey Murray; and daughter-in-law Mona Murray. She will be missed dearly by family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched. Rita will be laid to rest at 3093 Ashley River Road, Charleston, SC 29414. Family and friends are invited to come together to celebrate her life and share memories in the future.
Rita was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Roberta Hancock.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend Rita's Funeral Service 1:00 PM Wednesday, December 17, 2025 at the James A. McAlister Chapel, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston. The Rite of Committal will follow at Live Oak Memorial Gardens, 3093 Ashley River Road. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
