Richard E. Weatherford, Sr., owner of the Sand Dollar Social Club on Folly Beach, passed away Saturday, June 17, 2023. The relatives and friends of Richard E. Weatherford, Sr. are invited to attend a Gathering of Friends between 5:00 & 7:00 PM Thursday, June 22, 2023, at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston.
Richard was born October 12, 1940, at Roper Hospital in downtown Charleston. He grew up playing sports at Mitchell Playground and attended Murray Vocational High School. In 1975, he opened the Sand Dollar Social Club on Folly Beach and it remains as one of the oldest establishments on Folly. He loved his “Bar” and cherished the many friends he made over the years. Richard ran the Boston Marathon, competed in many races, but was most proud of completing several Ironman races.
Richard is predeceased by his parents, St. Elmo and Mildred Weatherford, and his brother, St. Elmo “Snookie” Weatherford, Jr. He is survived by his partner, Cindy Byrns; four children: Richard Weatherford, Jr. (Paula), Sherrie Lindberg (Robbie), Bryan Weatherford, and Skipper Weatherford (Christie); eight grandchildren: Richard Weatherford III (Brittany), Katie Glover (Matt), Jimmy Lindberg, West Weatherford (Abby), Jade Weatherford, McKenna Weatherford, Hollis Weatherford, and Jaxon Weatherford; four great-grandchildren; and three sisters: Delores Lopez (Joe), Marilyn Craig (Paul) and Linda Robinson (Jimmy), all of Charleston.
