Richard Edward Walsh

February 14, 1936 — July 22, 2016

Richard E. "Dick" Walsh, 80, of James Island, entered into eternal rest on Friday, July 22, 2016. Dick was born in the Bronx, New York the son of the late Tom and Anna Walsh. He served for 10 years in the US Navy as a salvage diver. He was transferred to Charleston, SC in 1960. After his Navy career, he worked in foundation construction and later as an engineer for GE. Since his retirement, he worked vigorously and passionately for veterans. He was active in the American Legion where he ultimately served as the State Commander for SC. He was also a life member of the VFW, and also a member of the Vietnam Veteran's of America. Dick was a Passé Chef De Gare with the 40/8. He was also a past Grand Knight at the Knights of Columbus. He was a Colonel in the Honorable Order is Kentucky Colonels. Lastly was a devoted (obsessed) Yankees fan. He was preceded in death by his first wife Betty and their son Skipper. Survivors include Leah, his loving wife of 40 years, his son John and wife Terry, daughter in law Tasia and her husband John McKnight, four grandchildren, Ryan, Greg, Kaitlynn & Erin Walsh, his sister Gail and husband Tommy Harmon, and his sister Joan Freese and brother Tommy Walsh. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Richard E. Walsh are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, July 26, 2016, at Nativity Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening between 5:30 and 7:30 PM at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Post 147, 968 Folly Rd., Charleston, SC 29412.
