Reuben David Martin

November 16, 1934 — March 25, 2015

Reuben David Martin, 80, of Charleston SC, husband of Catherine D. Martin, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, March 25, 2015. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben D. Martin are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial at 1:30 PM, Saturday, March 28, 2015 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM, at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway. His guestbook may be signed online at JamesAMcAlister.com. Mr. Martin was born in Calumet, Michigan, son of David Christopher Martin and Helen Kotyjarvi Martin of Ishpeming, Michigan. He was in the US Navy for four years and part of that time was stationed in Charleston aboard the USS Pandemus, eventually settling in Charleston but always referring to himself as a "Yooper" (from the upper peninsula of Michigan). He was a member of the Elks, American Association of Woodturners, and Blessed Sacrament Church. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Catherine Mary Dawkins Martin, two daughters, Tina Grady, Charleston, SC: Dianne Boik (Doug), Charlotte, NC; and a son, Glenn Martin (Kelly), Charleston, SC; one brother, Kenneth Martin (Judy), Ishpeming, MI; and six grandchildren, Christina, Michael, McKenna, Bennett, Alyssa and Lindsay. Reuben worked as a Machinist and Planner and Estimator and retired after 34 years from the Charleston Naval Shipyard after which he worked part time at Hinson's Mill shop. He made beautiful furniture for his home including a Charleston Rice bed, Thomas Elfe chest on chest, and Goddard Shell chest. He also made pens and bowls and delighted in giving these away to his relatives and friends. He also enjoyed playing canasta on Saturday nights with his good friends of 50 years, Jean and Bill Boner of Charleston, SC. Shrimping season was also a highlight and Wednesday morning breakfasts with his buddies, Henry Touchton, Dr. David Stone and Dr. Fred Schuh. He also enjoyed Pandemus Reunion trips taken with his wife. Reuben and the family looked forward to the annual week at Folly Beach with all of the Martin relatives. A special thanks to the loving care and kindness provided by Beverly Buncomb, his caretaker and to Scott of Hospice of Charleston. Memorials may be made to the Respite Care Charleston Office, 405 King St., Charleston, SC, 29403 or to the Fr. McCarthy Catholic Education Fund, 7 St. Teresa Dr., Charleston, SC 29407. Arrangements by James A. McAlister Inc, 766-1365.
