Muriel Tobin Farr

August 12, 1935 — June 21, 2015

Muriel Tobin Farr, elementary school teacher, professor, wife, mother and grandmother died on June 21, 2015. She was 79, and lived both in Charleston, SC and Flat Rock, NC. Born in New York City in 1935, she graduated at the age of 16 from Sacred Heart of Mary High School in 1952 and attended Ladycliff College where she earned her BA degree in English in 1956. Muriel then attended NYU where she earned her MBA in Education with a focus on Psychology while teaching kindergarten in Highland Falls. She then taught kindergarten at Garrison Union Free School before returning to Ladycliff College as a professor. In 1971 Muriel became the Chairman of the Psychology department at Ladycliff College. She then moved into a hospital administration role where she was the assistant to the President of Saint Luke and Roosevelt Hospitals in NYC. Her last career was assisting her husband Sims with his clients. Muriel was involved in several local community endeavors, while she raised her children, serving on the Board of Trustee of the Hamilton Fish Library as well as being on the Phillipstown Community Council. Her first husband, John Edward Byrnes Jr., from Garrison, NY blessed her with four children. Her second marriage to C. Sims Farr lasted for seventeen wonderful years and this marriage ended with his passing in December of 2007. Muriel is survived by her four children, John Byrnes, Michael Byrnes, James Byrnes and Katherine Haney as well as four stepchildren, seven grandchildren and eleven step-grandchildren. Her Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, June 25, 2015 at St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Charleston. There is a second memorial service in NYC on August 12, 2015 at 11:00 AM at St. Bartholomew Church.
