Mildred Janet Lewis Crites passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on February 5, 2022 in the company of her family. A service celebrating her life and faith was held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with interment following at Holy Cross Cemetery.
She is survived by her loving husband of 75 years, Jerome B. “Jerry” Crites; four sons: Jerome B. “Jerry” Crites, Jr., Steven L. Crites, Kenneth G. Crites, and Richard E. Crites; nine grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
Jan, as she was known to her family and friends, was born August 7, 1927 in Camden, SC, daughter of the late Paul Dunn Lewis and Mildred Gardner Lewis. She loved her family and cooking for them was one of her greatest joys. As the matriarch, nothing made her happier than hosting lavish holiday meals where she would make numerous desserts just to ensure that everyone had their favorite. A fierce card player and competitor, Jan played Bridge weekly with her friends until the age of 93, with her quick wit still on display. She was a great animal lover who always had a canine companion and rescued many dogs over the years.
She will be greatly missed and remembered for all the love and laughter she gave during her life. The family asks that memorials be made in her name to The Charleston Animal Society or Pet Helpers.
