James Island, SC - Mr. Michael James Powers, widower of Hedi H. Powers, 84, passed away March 16, 2013, at the Hospice Care Center in Mount Pleasant. The relatives and friends of Mr. Michael James Powers are invited to attend his funeral service at 2:30 PM Monday, March 18, 2013, from the chapel of James A. McAlister Funeral Home. The Rite of Committal will follow the service at Live Oak Memorial Gardens, Highway 61, Charleston. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A native of Salisbury, NC, Michael was a son of John Francis and Ursula Rowan Powers. He was married for 54 years to Hedi H. Powers, who preceded him in death on June 13, 2012. A World War II veteran of the United States Army, he worked for VC Chemical before re-entering the Army for service in Korea. After his service in the Army, worked for Pittsburgh Steel before joining the Charleston Naval Shipyard, from which he retired in 1989 as an Inside Machinist in Shop 31. A genunie "Mr. Fix-it", Michael was the go-to man for many in his neighborhood who relied on his skills and willingness to help with many repair projects. Mr. and Mrs. Powers were long-time members of the Church of the Nativity for many years, until declining health made attendance impossible. Mr. Powers is survived by his son, Roman F. Powers and his wife Haig of Edisto Island, SC, and daughter Gloria Powers of Johns Island, SC. Mr. Powers is also survived by his granddaughter, Katrina R. Powers, 1 sister, Gloria P. Morrill, and 1 brother, William R. Powers. Pleasant, SC 29464, or to American Legion Post 147, 968 Folly Road, Charleston, SC 29412. The family would like to offer their heartfelt gratitude to the many caregivers who provided Mr. and Mrs. Powers with comfort and companionship during their final months.
