Michael A. Latorre

March 6, 1943 — April 13, 2018

Michael A. LaTorre, husband of Catherine (Kitty) Jones LaTorre, died Friday, April 13, 2018 at his residence. The relatives and friends of Michael A. and Catherine (Kitty) LaTorre are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial 11:00 AM Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 1695 Wallenberg Blvd., Charleston. The Rite of Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery on James Island. The family will receive friends between 6:00 and 8:00 PM Monday at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway.

Michael was born in Charleston to Margaret and John LaTorre on March 6, 1943. He remained a proud Charlestonian his entire life and attended twelve years of Catholic school. He and his twin brother were proudly enrolled in the very first class at Blessed Sacrament School. He continued his Catholic education at Bishop England High School and graduated in 1961. He married the love of his life, Kitty, and lived his life as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Mike and Kitty were married for nearly forty years and embraced life by traveling the world and enjoying time spent with family and friends. Mike spent many years of his life working at the State Ports Authority. He became a respected member and retiree of the ILA 1771 Checker’s Union where he built relationships and made many lifelong friends. He believed in working hard and being proud of what you do. When he wasn’t at the waterfront, he was cheering on the Carolina Gamecocks at any and every sporting event. He grew to love sports while watching his two older brothers, John and Walter LaTorre, play football and basketball at the University of South Carolina. He became an avid Carolina fan and eventually was given the nickname “Carolina Mike.” He genuinely enjoyed anything related to sports and displayed his passion by becoming an umpire and coach for youth teams at St. Andrew’s Parks and Playground. There is no doubt he loved all things related to sports, but he experienced the most joy and happiness while watching his son, Bryan, play basketball in college and then two grandsons, Jimmy and Jaxon, play baseball. He showed unwavering support and dedication by attending every single game and sitting right behind home plate. Mike was the epitome of a family man and he lived his life by example. Above all else, he was a devout Catholic that truly cared about his faith and believed that the Catholic Church always led him in the right direction. He passed away peacefully at home while surrounded by his loving family who will deeply miss his presence, words of wisdom, and laughter.

Mike is survived by his loving wife and four children, Richard Weatherford Jr. (Paula), Sherrie Lindberg (Robbie), Bryan Weatherford, and Skipper Weatherford and eight grandchildren Richard Weatherford III (Brittany), West Weatherford, Katie L. Glover (Matt), Jimmy Lindberg, McKenna Weatherford, Hollis Weatherford, Jaxon Weatherford, and Jade Weatherford and one great-grandchild, Ava Weatherford. He is also survived by his three brothers John LaTorre, Walter LaTorre (Azalia), and his identical twin, Joe LaTorre (Sally) and many nieces and nephews.
