Mary Ritchie Simmons Tutterow, a lifetime resident of Charleston, departed this life on October 12, 2014. The relatives and friends of Mary Tutterow are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial 11:00 AM Tuesday, October 14, 2014, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 89 Hasell Street, Charleston. The Rite of Committal will be private. Friends may call between 6:00 & 8:00 PM Monday at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston. The Rosary will be recited at 7:30 PM. Mary was born in Charleston December 19, 1931, a daughter of the late Thomas Ritchie Simmons and Agatha Aimar Simmons. A graduate of Ashley Hall School, Class of 1950, she graduated Winthrop College in 1955. Mary worked at the Department of Social Services in downtown Charleston for 33 years. She was a member of numerous spiritual and historical societies, including the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Benevolent Society. Mary was a St. Cecilia's Society debutante. She was a member of both St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Mrs. Tutterow had a lifelong passion for geneaology and was a devoted Christian and student of the Catholic Church. The family wishes to recognize the compassionate team that cared for Mrs. Tutterow, including Dr. Austin Ball and his staff, Dr. George Keogh and his staff, the Care for Life staff, Delta Pharmacy, The Palms, Odyssey Hospice, Hospice of Charleston, and numerous caregivers. Mary is survived by her son, Winn S. Tutterow and wife Mary Bissell Tutterow of Charleston, two grandchildren, William Yonge Tutterow and Mary Addison Tutterow, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister and her brother-in-law, Charlotte Simmons McQueeney & William T. McQueeney.
