Mary, fondly known as Mickey, was born in Columbus, Ohio, daughter of the late Jean Blasius and James Franklin McBroom, a career Army officer. She attended Frankfurt University, Frankfurt, Germany. While her family was stationed at Fort Benning, GA, she met and married her husband of 46 years, the late Colonel William (Bill) Craton Screven Simpson. Mickey was the epitome of an Army officer's wife. She maintained her household and raised her six children during her husband's thirty-year military career, including a two-year deployment to Vietnam and Iran. She was a member of the Officers' Wives Club, a Girl Scout Troop leader, a Boy Scout Den mother, and an active member of the Catholic Church at every assignment. After Bill's retirement and final move to Charleston, SC, she was an assistant at Marguerite Sinkler Vaulk Interiors and the bookkeeper for Simpson & Moore Real Estate. Mickey and Bill were happiest when their home was filled with their children, grandchildren and friends. They maintained an open door policy at their homes in Charleston and Flat Rock, North Carolina. She will be best remembered by her thirteen grandchildren for her grilled cheese sandwiches and sugar cookies. Mickey is survived by her devoted children: William Screven Simpson (Julia), Dr. Mary Simpson Lang (Albert), James Screven Simpson (Cordes), Claudia Simpson Hapak (Haydon), Jean Simpson Knowlton, and Robert Craton Simpson (Janice). Her Grandchildren are: Catie, Margaret and Albert Lang; Caroline Simpson; Jule, Frank, Bill & Joe Hapak; Sarah, Burk & Charles Knowlton; Craton and Hannah Simpson. She is also survived by her sister Lynn McBroom Ruger, her brother Rory McBroom and sister-in-law Sharron McBroom. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers David McBroom and Charles McBroom. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Charleston Foundation, 676 Wando Park Blvd, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464, or St. John's Catholic Church, 351 N Market Street, Logan, OH 43138.
