Mary Claire Pinckney Jones Seeger of Charleston died Thursday, May 20, 2010 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born on Edisto Island on Sunday, November 6, 1921. She was predeceased by her father, Thomas M. Pinckney of Edisto Island, and her mother, Ethel F. Smith Pinckney Inabinette of Hollywood. She was also predeceased by her first husband, Shelton J. Jones of Charleston, and her brother, Thomas M. Pinckney also of Charleston. She is survived by her second husband. Billy F. Seeger of Charleston; by her sister, Mildred Pinckney Boykin of Wadmalaw Island; by her children, Shelton J. Jones, Jr. of Decatur, Georgia; Anne Jones LaCroix of Piano, Texas; Randolph S. Jones of Fayetteville, Georgia; Malcolm S. Jones of Lewisville, Texas; and Elizabeth Craft Jones of Monroe, Louisiana; and by nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mrs. Seeger was a graduate of Winthrop College, Class of 1941. Mrs. Seeger was a school teacher in Charleston County schools for many years. She was also a social worker in Monroe, Louisiana, and Brunswick, Georgia. She wrote and published a novel, Ursa Major, She also wrote many short books about her family and life on Edisto Island. She was perhaps proudest of her efforts to preserve the Gullah dialect, to include several books written in the Gullah dialect and talks she gave around the Southeast. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Billy F. Seeger are invited to attend her funeral service at 11:00 AM Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at the James A. McAlister Chapel, 1620 Savannah Hwy. Interment will be in Live Oak Cemetery, Walterboro, SC. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday morning from 10:00 AM until service time.
