Mary Agnes McGorty Pattillo, 102, died Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at her home on James Island. Mary was born May 24, 1914, in Charleston, the daughter of Mary Torlay McGorty and Thomas James McGorty. She was predeceased by her husband, Francis Edward Pattillo, her parents and her brothers: Thomas, Franklin, John, Russell and Charles McGorty. Mary was blessed with a loving family of five children and their spouses: Patricia and Rick Johnson, Carole and Dennis Darling, Edward and Pam Pattillo, Jane Stretch (Joe) and Tommy and Barbara Pattillo. She has eight grandchildren, six of whom are married, as well as fifteen great grandchildren. Mary lived in Orangeburg after she married in 1939 until 1960 when she returned to Charleston and went to work for the News and Courier. She retired after 23 years of faithful service in 1983 at the age of 69. Mary was an avid Braves fan and always looked forward to baseball season. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, gardening and was also a wonderful cook. Mary worked hard all of her life, and God has blessed us. She graduated from Bishop England High School in 1932 and was the oldest surviving graduate of Bishop England at their 100th Anniversary Celebration. The relatives and friends of Mary Agnes McGorty Pattillo are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM, Friday, April 28, 2017, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1695 Wallenberg Blvd. The Rite of Committal will follow at Riverview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM, this Thursday evening at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy.
