Mary Jane Peter Means, 94, of Mt. Pleasant, SC died peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, in her home. She was born on October 16, 1928, in Orlando, Florida, the daughter of Jordan Asher Peter and Doris Yarnell Peter. She attended local Orlando schools and Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
In 1955 Mary Jane married Roger Wall Smith and moved to Greenville, SC where they raised two children and enjoyed an active community life. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church for 27 years. In 1983 Mary Jane remarried and moved to Spartanburg, SC living there for 33 years. She was a member of The Episcopal Church of the Advent and other community organizations. Mary Jane loved her adopted state of South Carolina and felt very blessed to have lived there for the majority of her life. In 2014 she moved to Mt. Pleasant to be closer to her children.
She is survived by two children, Roger Wall Smith, Jr. of New Smyrna Beach, FL (Kristine) and Mary Page Carmody of Mt. Pleasant, SC (Charlie); a sister, Doris Peter Culp of Orlando, FL; five grandchildren, Kellen Smith, Laura Smith Vankirk, Murphy Smith, Charles Carmody and Ryan Page Carmody as well as three great-grandchildren, Jack Vankirk, Atticus Vankirk and Cassius Carmody.
Mary Jane was predeceased by her second husband, Thomas Samuel Means, Jr. and her sisters, Annette Peter Neel of Orlando, FL and Patsy Peter Beatty of Lookout Mountain, Tennessee.
A service and entombment will take place at Woodlawn Memorial Park, in Orlando, Florida on May 12, 2023, where she will join other members of her family.
