Mary Gertrude Masche Friend, widow of Clifton G. (Mac) Friend, entered into eternal rest on Friday, January 12, 2018. The relatives and friends of Mary M. Friend are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial at 2:00 PM, January 25, 2018, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church and at the Celebration of Mary’s Life between 4:00 and 6:00 PM, following the church service, at the Snee Farm Country Club, 1200 Club Dr., Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464. The Burial will be private.
Mary was born in Charleston, SC, August 14, 1922, the daughter of Emil Lenhardt Masche, Sr. and Gertrude Veronica Groves Masche, but spent many of her teen years as the only child of Uncle Charles Masche and Aunt Annie Otjen Masche on Spring Street.
Mary was a 1939 graduate of Bishop England High School and a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church since 1949 when she and Mac built a home in Avondale. She also taught kindergarten at Blessed Sacrament School. She was a devoted and dedicated wife and mother, a proud and doting grandmother and great grandmother. Mary was an avid bridge player and a fanatic tennis spectator.
She is survived by three children, Veronica Friend Wolfswinkel (Don) of Mt Pleasant, SC, Clifton G. Friend, Jr. (Judy) of Mt Pleasant, SC and Robin Masche Friend (Michael Nobile) of Monarch Beach, CA; four grandchildren, Richard Lazik, (Kim) of Summerville, SC, Christopher Lazik, (Iyun) of Fremont, CA, Caroline Friend Kobleur (Steffen) of Hilton Head, SC and Michael Friend (LeighAnn) of Hanahan, SC; seven great-grandchildren: Nicholas, Calvin, Loren, Alex, Lucas, Owen, and Sara; siblings, Ann Masche Duc of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Manning Masche of Summerville, SC; sisters-in-law, Gloria Masche and Anna Friend Utsey, both of James Island, SC; and many nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by her husband of over 53 years, Clifton G. Friend (Mac); a great granddaughter, Charlotte Lazik; brothers, Emil L. Masche, Jr. and John Masche; and sister, Elizabeth M. Clair.
The family would like to thank Richard Mills, MD; Mary’s caregivers: Crescent Hospice and the caregivers at Assisted Living, The Palms of Mt. Pleasant and special friends, Lynne, Alison and Vanessa.
