It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Alice Hunter Fleming on Thursday, May 4, 2023, at her home.
She was the eldest of five children, born to Charlie Boyd Hunter and Hazel Louise Ketchum Hunter on November 5, 1930. She moved to Charleston during her Freshmen year of high school and attended St. Andrew’s Parish High where she graduated Valedictorian in 1947. While there, she performed under the direction of E. Bernard Hester in the production of “Love is Blind”, where she married a man who would eventually become her husband and soulmate. After high school, she attended The College of Charleston and was a devoted member of Chi Omega Fraternity, Zeta Gamma Chapter. After college she married her husband and later joined him in Japan where he was stationed. After his time in the Air Force, they returned to Charleston to build their home in Edgewater Park.
She loved her neighborhood, where she lived and raised her family for 68 years. She was a dedicated member of the Edgewater Park Garden Club Member since 1962. She was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and attended Circle meetings there for many years. Mary loved playing tennis and was a member of the Charleston Tennis Center where she competed on several different teams. Her most meaningful endeavor, however, was in raising her family with her husband beside her.
Mary was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and a kind and thoughtful friend to so many. She will be sorely missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her. She is survived by her sisters: Eleanor Hunter Stewart (Jim), Lillian (Itty) Hunter O’Brien Dodson (Jim); her brothers: Charles Boyd Hunter, Richard Scott Hunter (Ann); her sister-in-law Mickey Fleming Robertson; her daughter Christine Fleming Sadler (Tom); her son John Francis Fleming, Jr. (Sandy); her eight grandchildren: Jessica, Hunter, Jordan, Amanda, Mackenzie, Mariah, Kyler, and John lll; 12 great-grandchildren (with one on the way), two great-great-grandchildren, and countless nieces and nephews who all referred to her as “Big”. Mary was predeceased by her devoted husband, John (Jack) Francis Fleming, and her beloved son, Brenner Scott Fleming.
We are so very thankful for the wonderful care given to her by Lutheran Hospice and her devoted, loving, precious caregivers who stayed by her side to the end.
Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of her life between 5:00 & 7:00 PM Friday, May 12, 2023 at James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston.
