Mary Francis Aytes, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, beloved mother, grandmother and friend, surrounded by her loving family, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2025 at the age of 98. Born on January 28, 1927, in Charleston, South Carolina, Mary Francis graduated from Bishop England High School. She dedicated her life to serving others, primarily through her work with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office and the Commissioners of Public Works of the City of Charleston. She was known for her unwavering kindness, compassion, and generosity, which left a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
A woman of many passions, Mary Francis loved to travel the world. She found joy in line dancing, playing cards with friends and spent countless hours cross-stitching, creating beautiful pieces that embodied her artistic spirit. However, nothing brought her more happiness than the time she spent with her family. Her children, Evelyn "Lynn" Kennally (Michael), Susan Reubish (Michael) and George E. "Buddy" Aytes, Jr. (Linda), along with her grandchildren, Jason Herring (Melissa), Todd Herring, Donna Halter (Matthew), Julie Wood (Daniel), and Toni Kennally were the treasures of her life. She also loved spending time with her eight great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Mary Francis' home was always filled with laughter and love, as her family gathered to share stories and make unforgettable memories.
Mary Francis' legacy will continue to live on through her family and all whom she touched with her warmth and spirit. Friends and family are invited to celebrate her remarkable life with a funeral service at James A. McAlister's Chapel, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston, SC on May 30, 2025, at 11:00 AM. The family will receive friends starting at 10:00 AM before the service. Mary Francis will be laid to rest at Holy Cross Cemetery following the ceremony, where her loved ones will gather in remembrance of a truly special soul.
Mary Francis was preceded in death by her parents, William A. Johnson and Evelyn DeAntonio Johnson, her husband, George E. Aytes, Sr., her daughter, Evelyn "Lynn" Kennally, and granddaughter, Toni Kennally.
