Marvin Donald McCarthy, Jr., 77 years old of Beaufort, SC passed away peacefully on May 14, 2015 at Memorial Hospital in Savannah, Georgia. Better known as "Mac" McCarthy to most everyone, including his fellow SC State Troopers with which he served 30 years, finally retiring as a lieutenant. During his career with law enforcement, Mac headed up security for many notables including two Presidents. Mac was not just a SC trooper; in life he was also a trooper, never wasting a moment. Family came first to Mac as can be attested by his 58 years of marriage to Allison Hanna McCarthy and his extraordinary relationship to his son Donald McCarthy and daughter-in-law Deborah McCarthy of Bluffton, SC. Most people think of SC State Troopers as rough and tumble but not Mac. Gentle almost to a fault, Mac was often known to pay speeding tickets which he had written to people that he later found out did not have the resources to pay the fine. A Navy veteran, Mac's love for sea never faltered. An avid fisherman, scuba diver, hunter and occasional golfer, Mac lived life to the fullest. On a humorous note, his love for family included of all things a cat named "Kitty." That fur ball was treated better than most people! A Beaufort resident since 1962, Mac's final wish was in lieu of flowers, donations should be made to one of the following. The Waddell Mariculture Center in Bluffton, SC or the Carteret St. United Methodist Church, of which he was a parishioner. Make checks out to the Waddell Fund, c/o The Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, P.O. Box 23019, Hilton Head, SC 29925 or to his church, the "West Street Building Fund," 408 Carteret St., Beaufort, SC 29902. Mac's funeral was limited to family only on May 18, 2015 at Magnolia Cemetery in Charleston, SC. His guestbook may be signed at www.jamesamcalister.com. Arrangements by JAMES A.
