Martha Woodall Thornhill

September 27, 1932 — October 20, 2021

Martha Woodall Thornhill, age 89, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 20, 2021.

Martha was born September 27, 1932, in Augusta, Georgia to Velma and James Woodall. She graduated from The University of South Carolina and married Edwin “Ned” Jesse Thornhill. The two were happily married until Ned’s death in 2018. Martha suffered from dementia the last ten years of her life, but she never lost her spunk or ability to let you know exactly how she felt about a subject. She was an outspoken conservative and never hesitated to show anyone who visited the picture she had of her with Ronald Reagan. She was pretty outspoken on any subject. She had her opinions and was not afraid to let you know what they were. Martha was incredible mother who not only taught her children how to throw a cast net, but also how to entertain a crowd effortlessly, no matter what time they showed up.

She was an avid fisherman and loved nothing more to be on her dock, rod in hand, anytime she felt the “tide was right”. She loved to shrimp, and she and Ned spent endless hours in their aluminum yacht throwing a cast nest in the little creeks around Rockville where they lived. Martha and Ned loved their family and friends and their house was always open to any and all who wanted to stop by.

Known as Mimi by her six grandchildren, Martha baked millions of cookies in her lifetime and always had cookie dough in the freezer ready for a grandchild to roll out, cut out with a cookie cutter and cover with sprinkles.

Martha is predeceased by her loving husband Ned and her son, Edwin “Ned” Jesse Thornhill III. She is survived by her daughter, Martha Thornhill Walters; son, Frank Dunnington Thornhill; and six grandchildren: Parker Walters, Lawson Walters, Caroline Walters, Winn Thornhill, Thomas Thornhill and Capers Thornhill.

The family would like to thank the staff at Ashley River Plantation for the amazing care and love they showed Ned and Martha in the last years of their lives.

Friends of the family are invited for a casual drop-in between 5:00 and 7:00 PM, Thursday, October 28, 2021, at the Walters home, 528 Pelzer Drive, Mt. Pleasant.
