Marjorie St. Clair Smith O'Brien passed away Saturday, March 19, 2016. The relatives and friends of Marjorie St. Clair Smith O'Brien are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial 11:00 AM Wednesday, March 23, 2016, at Nativity Catholic Church, 1061 Folly Road, James Island. The Rite of Committal will follow at St. Lawrence Cemetery, 60 Huguenin Avenue in Charleston. The family will receive friends between 5:00 and 7:00 PM Tuesday at the James A. Marjorie was born in Charleston in the summer of 1921 to Estelle Landry Smith and Thomas Joseph Smith, and grew up on Bennett Street and Station 27 on Sullivan's Island. A graduate of the College of Charleston and a proud Phi Mu, Marjorie attended Cathedral School and Bishop England High School. Marjorie married the love of her life, Julius Leroy O'Brien, who passed away in 1956. She spent a long career as the secretary at Nativity School, where she helped generations of children through the bumps and scrapes of life. However, her most important role was making sure her family was taken care of in every way. She was an exceptional mother, friend and human being and will be missed by everyone whose life she touched. Marjorie spent her remaining years taking care of her three children and making them feel truly valued and cherished: Thomas Joseph O'Brien (Sherrill), Lilla Seabrook O'Brien Folsom (Foster) of James Island and Michael Charles O'Brien (Sharon) of Asheville, NC. She also leaves behind two exceptional Granddaughters, Alicia DeRocke O'Brien of Charleston and Elisabeth Landry O'Brien Kryway (Brett), of Austin, Texas; Great-granddaughters Emma and Ava Kryway; Nieces and Nephews Henry (Henk) Brandt (Caroline Rivers), Joe Ann Brandt Dickinson(William), Diane Brandt Brannen (Randy), Pam Brandt (Clayton Doherty), Rosanne Brandt and Amy Brandt Stewart (Derek Brown). Marjorie's sister, Anne Smith Brandt, predeceased her, as did her brother-in-law, Dr. Henry Aimar Brandt.Members of the "Tiny Temple," her long-time friends from Nativity parish, will serve as Honorary Pallbearers: Maureen Minaudo, Armine Richardson, Fran Taylor, Phylis Cafiero, Mary Coates, Donna Kline, Mary Ann Calloway and Betty Dronen.A special note of gratitude to her friends at Bishop Gadsden who made her time there such a joy. Thanks also to the Bishop Gadsden nurses, to Josephine, and the wonderful ladies from Hospice of Charleston who brought Marjorie physical peace and comfort and Father Kingsley who brought her spiritual ease.In lieu of flowers, a donation to Nativity Catholic Church or the Bishop Gadsden Resident's Assistance Fund (1 Bishop Gadsden Way, Charleston, SC 29412) would be appreciated.
