Mary Marguerite McLaughlin Scott Bishop CHARLESTON - Mary Marguerite McLaughlin Scott Bishop, 80, of Charleston, first married to Winfield R. Scott, who died in 1984, and widow of the late Jerome J. Bishop, entered into eternal rest on the morning of Friday, March 23, 2012. The relatives and friends of Marguerite Bishop are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 Noon, Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 5 St. Teresa Drive, Charleston. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway. Rite of Committal will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery. Following the funeral service, the family will receive friends at 177 Wappoo Rd, Charleston. Marguerite was born in Charleston on October 1, 1932, the second of two children of John F. McLaughlin and Anna Marguerite Burmester McLaughlin. She graduated from Ashley Hall, where she later served on the Alumni Board and received several awards, and continued with several higher education courses at The Citadel and College of Charleston. Marguerite was born at home on Alexander Street, started her Christian life as a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in downtown Charleston and later was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church for 58 years, where she was director of music for the adult and youth choirs, and provided physical education for Blessed Sacrament School. She was owner and operator of Marguerite's School of Dance, taught piano and voice and was also the organist and music director at St. Margaret's Church in Maggie Valley, NC. Marguerite was involved in many activities in her community including serving as President of the Charleston Yacht Club's Ladies Auxiliary, President of the Charleston Rifle Club's Ladies Vice President of S.C. Genealogy Society and Flotilla Commander in the Coast Guard Auxiliary for 36 years where she received many distinguished awards. She enjoyed working as the General Director of the Greater Charleston Y.M.C.A. She loved her volunteer work for Charleston Symphony Designer House, the Charleston Elk's Club's "Does", Charleston Historical Society and the Garden Club of Charleston. Marguerite raced sailboats and powerboats with her Dad, and loved sailing to the Bahamas. She raised horses, taught riding lessons and excelled in flying both her own aircraft and her Dad's. Her love of sports can be seen through the enjoyment of scuba diving, swimming, water skiing, tennis, and archery. Marguerite was a dare devil, loving to tour and race her Harley Davidson motorcycle as a young woman. She is survived by three children; Daughter, Dr. Marguerite Scott Raaen and her husband Eric in MD and two sons, Winfield F. Scott and his wife, Betty Ann and Michael McLaughlin Scott and his wife, Tracie. She has 5 grandchildren - Hartley M. Caldwell and his wife Margaret in GA, Dr. Sara Marguerite Caldwell in OR, Tracy M. Scott, Christopher Scott and Hunter Scott. She has 3 great grandchildren - Margaret and Virginia Caldwell in GA and Emerson Caldwell Jones in OR. She leaves her brother, John Francis McLaughlin, Jr. in FL; her niece, Yvonne Coleman and her husband Robert; her great niece, Alice Coleman and her husband Willie Nabors; her great, great nephew, Jonathan Nabors; her niece, Ann Lynn Scott Mantey in PA, Todd Scott in CA, Steve Scott in PA and their spouses and children; her brother-in-law and good friend Harry Scott and his wife, Rose in PA. She leaves many cousins in the McLaughlin's, Burmesters, Dawsons, Malones, Cookes, Condons, Thornells and Krugers. Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations may be made to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 5 St. Teresa Drive, Charleston, SC 29407, or Ashley Hall School, 172 Rutledge Ave, Charleston, SC 29403.
