Margaret Ortmann Prentiss

Margaret Ortmann Prentiss, 86, passed away peacefully May 1, 2017 at 2:30 PM in her North Charleston, SC home. Margie was born February 24, 1931, in Charleston, SC to the late Perez Ortmann, Loraine Kirkland Ortmann and sister Eulalie Adele Ortmann Baker. She was the wife of the late Charles (Bruce) Brewster Prentiss III. The relatives and friends of Margaret O. Prentiss are invited to attend her Funeral Service at 2:00 PM, Thursday, May 25, 2017, at the James A. McAlister Chapel, 1620 Savannah Hwy.  Margie grew up downtown on Grove Street and graduated from Murray Vocational School. On October 8, 1951, she married Bruce and they began a life together. As a young woman, she worked at a financial institution and then began working at Charleston Drapery Service as a seamstress. She served on the Women's Auxiliary as an active member of the Charleston Yacht Club. In the mid-seventies, she and her husband sold their modest home West of the Ashley and began residing on boats, but the North Carolina mountains always called her name and by the early 1980's they moved to Maggie Valley, NC, where they lived for the next 30 years. There she became an active member of the Grace Episcopal Church in Waynesville, NC, and found her passion for knitting with a local community knitting club. Mrs. Prentiss enjoyed traveling whether it was boat, cruises or automobile. Her favorite pastimes included family, friends and gardening. She was truly a beautiful person and will be sadly missed by those she touched.Mrs. Prentiss is survived by her two daughters, Eugenia Prentiss Craggs and son-in-law, Kevin William Craggs of Summerville, SC and Jennifer Middleton Prentiss and espouse James Michael Kniss of North Charleston, SC; two grandsons, William Prentiss Murray and his wife, Carlie Murray and James Mitchell Preston, Jr. and his wife, Jordan Grooms Preston; great grandchildren, Morgan Ann Murray, William Prentiss Murray, Jr., Isabelle Grace Preston, Gabrielle Faith Preston, and Anabelle Hope Preston, as well as, numerous nieces and nephews.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in honor of Margaret Prentiss, to Pet Helpers or the SPCA.
