Malcolm Lewis Danner

August 9, 1934 — August 30, 2010

Malcolm Lewis Danner, 76, the husband of Shirley D. Danner, passed away at his home on James Island, Monday morning. He was born in Golden Meadow, Louisiana, the son of John Myles Danner and Sue Lynn Carroll Danner, on August 9, 1934. Moving to Charleston and Folly Beach in particular at a young age, Mr. Danner learned and loved to fish and hunt in the surrounding areas. His passion for the outdoors made him a proponent of maintaining a healthy eco system so that plant and animal life may flourish. Mr. Danner and childhood friend Edward Mitchell once received the Carnegie Medal for Heroism after saving the life of a young Navy wife who was drowning in the ocean. He used the prize money to finish his major in English at the College of Charleston, where he graduated from in 1956. He served in the United States Navy on active duty as well as the Naval Reserve, retiring as a Lt. Commander. For thirty years he worked as a Lab Technician for Exxon Corporation here and in Florida. Mr. Danner will be deeply missed by all of his friends but most of all by his family who survive him, his loving wife of 46 years, Shirley Dodson Danner; his son, Douglas Myles Danner; his sister, Carol Katchur and his nephews, Raymond and David Coleman. The relatives and friends of Malcolm L. Danner are invited to attend his Memorial Service at 2:00pm, Thursday, September 2, 2010 at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 714 Riverdale Drive Charleston, SC 29407. The family will receive friends at 1:00pm until the time of service. Please consider memorial contributions in lieu of flowers to either the Charleston Animal Society, 2455 Remount Road, N. Charleston, S.C. 29406 or to Pet Helpers, 1447 Folly Road Charleston, SC 29412. Arrangements are by the JAMES A. MCALISTER FUNERAL HOME, 1620 Savannah Hwy. Charleston, 766-1365. Mr. Danner's guestbook may be signed online at www.jamesa.mcalister.com.
