Maggie Mae Hopkins Roper was born on April 17, 1927, to Spencer Hopkins, Sr., and Maggie Mae Kitt Hopkins in Plant City, Florida. She quietly departed this life on Monday, March 17, 2025, while she peacefully slept.
Funeral services will be conducted 4:00 PM Sunday, April 6, 2025 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1309 Secessionville Road, James Island. The Repass will immediately follow at Hope's Treasure Chest, 1528-B Folly Road, James Island.
Maggie spent the early part of her childhood in Blackville, SC. After the untimely death of her mother, her father relocated Maggie and her siblings to Charleston, SC. She attended the public schools of Charleston.
Maggie married Joseph Roper, Sr. on August 30, 1947. They reared seven children. In August of 1959, she dedicated herself to Jehovah and was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. She served faithfully for 66 years. She was a loving matriarch and a hard worker. She always made sure her family was provided for. She was a devoted reader of the scriptures, an avid game show watcher, a fantastic cook, a snazzy dresser, an animal lover (especially dogs,) a baseball fan, a nurturer, and a strict disciplinarian.
Maggie was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Joseph Roper, Sr., a son, Edward Roper, and a granddaughter, Calarda Brown-Ali. Maggie was the last living of all her siblings: Elizabeth Hopkins-Brown, Spencer (JD) Hopkins, Jr., James Thomas Hopkins, William Albert Brisbane, Sr., and Joseph Ernest Hopkins, Sr. Those left to celebrate her life and cherish her memories are her children: Lois R. Fields, Frances H. Lewis (Rosland), Joseph Roper, Jr. (Geneva), Deborah R. Brown (Alfred), Victor Roper (Theresa), and Oveta Gilliard. In addition, her living legacy includes: 18 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren, 33 great-great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
