Linda Bell Jeffers

October 7, 1942 — January 3, 2019

Linda Lee Bell Jeffers, resident of Charleston, formerly of Harleyville, passed away on Thursday, January 3, 2019 in Charleston. The relatives and friends of Linda Jeffers are invited to attend her Funeral Service 2:30 PM Sunday January 6, 2019, at Bethel United Methodist Church, 1163 Beidler Forest Rd, Dorchester, SC. Burial will follow in the churchyard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

She was born on October 7, 1942 in Harleyville, the daughter of Dick and Emily Bell. Linda went to the University of South Carolina at the age of 16, and in a time when women rarely got into graduate school. She received her Master's Degree from Western Carolina. She taught for 7 years at Winyah High School in Georgetown, then for over 25 years at Summerville High School and the College of Charleston. Linda was a Department Head at Summerville High School in English and taught English at the College of Charleston in the Master's programs. She held numerous board seats and chairs on many local and national educational boards. Linda also was an education software consultant for IBM and other tech companies.

Linda was a passionate USC football and baseball fan. She held season tickets and donated to both programs. During games, she often remarked that she may be the 'Chicken Curse' affecting South Carolina. Starting in 2010, she began saying 'Go Clemson' or 'Go UCLA' to break the curse. This was successful as USC won national baseball titles in 2010 and 2011, and finished second in 2012. She often talked about how happy this would have made her father, who used to take the train to the Major League Baseball World Series, if the harvest was done for the year before there were west coast teams.

She will be sadly missed by her children James S. Jeffers, Jr of Charleston, and Richard W. Jeffers of Dorchester; Grandchildren Rachel and Hannah Jeffers of Dorchester; and sister, Emily Gaye Ducker of Myrtle Beach. She was predeceased by her father, John Richard (Dick) Bell (Harleyville), mother Emily Galloway Bell (Oats/Darlington County), and daughter-in-law Becky Jeffers (Charleston). Pallbearers for the service are: Rodney Bell, Logan Bell, Buddy Carter, Jimmy Boyd, Remington Prince, Stephen Murray, and Holcombe Bell (Honorary).

Memorial donations may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 1163 Beidler Forest Road, Dorchester, SC 29437.
