Laurent "Larry" Wayne Britton

September 4, 1956 — September 9, 2014

Mr. Laurent Wayne Britton, 58, entered into eternal rest on September 9, 2014. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Laurent W. Britton are invited to attend his Funeral Service at 11:00 AM Friday, September 12, 2014 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 3871 Betsy Kerrison Pkwy, Johns Island. The burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Laurent Wayne Britton, "Larry" to his friends, was a true servant leader. He began working for St. John's Fire Department as a volunteer after he got out of high school. Shortly after he graduated from the College of Charleston, he worked for Kiawah Island Security where he met his wife, Marsha. He then went to work full time for St. Johns Fire Deptartment. He was also a member of the Charleston County Rescue Squad during this time. Larry loved the Fire Department and the Rescue Squad. Whenever a call went out, he was out the door in minutes, whether on duty or off. After working several years and working his way up to Battalion Chief, he was hired by the Isle of Palms as their Fire Chief. He worked there for a little over 2 years before Hurricane Hugo hit. Larry led his Fire Department and aided other departments with his usual dedication and love for what he was doing. This was during a very devastating time for Charleston, and Larry spent weeks away from his family taking care of others. Larry worked for several years at Silkworm in Mt. Pleasant after he left the Isle of Palms, where using his skills in leadership, he managed the warehouse. He made lifelong friends there, just as he did everywhere he went. After Larry left Silkworm, he went back to a community service job as the Manager of Communications for the County of Charleston. He spent many hours working with members of the many Fire Departments, Police Departments, and Rescue Squad members that also serve this county with love. Larry loved his job at the County and he loved all the people he met and worked with. It is hard to put into words the amount of dedication and love he had for all he did. He was a very dedicated man. Our loss of Larry will leave a hole in many peoples' hearts. He never met a stranger. Larry Britton is survived by his wife, Marsha Parker Britton and his son, Laurent (Larry) Britton II, His daughter-in-law, Tina Thomas, and grandchildren, Austin Thomas, Bryar Thomas, and Lauren Britton, his brother, Eric Britton and wife Jo, and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Charleston County Rescue Squad, 2521 Rescue Road, North Charleston, SC 29405.
