Charles Lawrence 'Larry' Shurlds, 73, husband of Nancy Newton Shurlds, entered into eternal rest on June 30, 2018. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Charles L. Shurlds are invited to attend his Memorial Service 6:00 PM, Thursday, July 5, 2018, at the James A. McAlister Chapel, 1620 Savannah Hwy., Charleston. The family will receive friends between 4:30 and 6:00 PM Thursday evening.
Larry was born October 13, 1944 in Memphis, TN, the only son of Lawrence Edwin and Maxcyne Daggett Shurlds. He graduated with a Master’s Degree in Science from Memphis State University, and studied there additionally for certification in Education Administration.
He pursued a thirty-five year career as a headmaster of private schools, mentoring teachers and leading young people in pursuance of academic excellence, personal integrity, and character growth. He was an avid bridge player, qualified as a Life Master Bridge Player, and played daily on-line with expert players from all over the world. Larry loved to cook, and mastered exotic dishes and Southern favorites with excellence.
Larry will be remembered as a gentle, intellectual soul, who cared deeply for his family and all young people. Predeceased by his parents and his sister, Ann Brown; he is survived by his wife, Nancy Newton Shurlds, a daughter, Bliss Newton Shurlds, and a sister, Katherine Shurlds of Fayetteville, AR.
