Larry E. Mercier, 83, passed away on April 19, 2024, at home surrounded by family in Charleston, SC.
Larry was born on May 7, 1940, in Blue Island, IL. Larry, known affectionately as "Boo", served in the United States Coast Guard and was employed by Detyens Shipyard for three years and Westvaco for 37 years, where he retired in 2002. After retirement, he worked at Luxury Cars of Charleston to fill his free time due to boredom.
Larry is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Sarah Rourk Mercier; two daughters, Michele Bliss and Janis Griffin (Joe); granddaughter, Ashley Bliss (Kameron Josiger); great-grandchildren, Grayson and Finley, granddaughter, Brendan Deichert (Ryan); great-grandchildren, Zachary, Zoey, Caden and Savannah, two grandsons, Joshua Bliss and Patrick Griffin. Larry’s special dog, Maggie, brought him immense joy (even though he did not want her!). He is also survived by his sister, Ranee Rosenlund of Tinley Park, IL and many nieces and nephews.
Larry was preceded in death by his father, Stanley Mercier; his mother, Irene Kepperling and stepfather, Rene Kepperling as well as his dear friend, Trez Neeley (Betty) of Lutz, FL.
A man of honor and dedication, Larry will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to his country and his long-standing career. He touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was a loving and generous husband, father and grandfather. He always helped anyone in need, he was a giver, not a taker.
Larry's Celebration of Life will be private and at a later date.
