JULIAN E. SMITH, JR. CHARLESTON - Entered into eternal rest on Sunday, May 16, 2010 Julian Eugene Smith, Jr., husband of Shirley Speed Smith. Julian E. Smith, Jr. was born in Charleston, a son of the late, Julian Eugene Smith , Sr. and Helen Kulinski Smith on Tuesday, September 21, 1926 and attended Murray Vocational School. "Junie" served in World War II as a Corporal in the United States Army and later as Sergeant First Class in the Ready Reserve. He was extremely proud to have served our Country and will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Junie was a Master Plumber and retired owner of Julius E. Smith Plumbing Company. He was proud to be an Honorary Life Member of the Hibernian Society and a member of St. Joseph's Church. He spent retirement years working in his beautiful garden and enjoying family and friends. In his younger years he volunteered at the Catholic Orphanage and supported numerous community projects through his memberships in various local organizations. His sisters, Helen S. Porter and Bette S. Griffith, predeceased him Surviving are his wife, Shirely Speed Smith, four children, Susan Elizabeth Smith Fox, Julian E. Smith III, Paul Anthony Smith and Charles Gerard Smith and his wife, Robin; five grandchildren, Ryan Fox and his wife, Kate, Jennifer M. Fox, Meghan E. Smith, Sarah E. Smith and J. Lewis Smith and numerous nieces and nephews. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Julian E. Smith, Jr. are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends on this Tuesday evening from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 5900 Core Rd., Suite 504, Charleston, SC 29406 or the Hibernian Society, Elevator Fund, 105 Meeting St., Charleston, SC 29401.
