Joyce P. Suhs, 86, of Charleston, SC, died Saturday at Roper Hospital, Charleston, SC. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 36 years, Gerhard Suhs.
Joyce was born in Hartford, Connecticut and graduated from Buckley High School in 1956. She then graduated from the secretarial program at Morse Business College. Joyce was a secretary at Combustion Engineering in Windsor, CT prior to raising her family. After her children were grown, Joyce was the school secretary at Blueberry Hill Elementary School before retiring to Seabrook Island, SC. She was a skillful knitter and passionate reader and traveler. She was a gourmet cook and at each Christmas she thrilled many with her tins of cookies, rum balls and pizzelles.
Joyce also enjoyed her time volunteering at Medical University of South Carolina rocking babies in the neonatal unit and spending time with family and friends at the Seabrook Island Club. Several years after the death of Gerhard, Joyce reconnected with Herb Lau, a longtime family friend who had lost his wife. Joyce and Herb were loving partners for 17 years.
She was the mother of two sons, Kurtis and wife Ann of Johns Creek, GA., and Darin of Johns Island, SC and a daughter, Kimberly and husband Danny King of Palmer, MA. She is also survived by three grandchildren: Madison, Daniel, and Benjamin; her brother, Bobby and wife Jan Pecott of Little River, SC, and many nieces and nephews, Herb's family as well as her adored dog, Patches.
Joyce's family is eternally grateful for the dedication and loving care of so many people. Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Humane Society.
Joyce's Memorial Service will be held 2:00 PM, Saturday, April 27, 2024, at the James A. McAlister Chapel, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston, SC 29407.
Joyce's Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9:00 AM Friday, May 3, 2024, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 519 Longmeadow Street, Longmeadow, MA, followed by the Rite of Committal in Longmeadow Cemetery.
