Joyce Buckles Mclaughlin

March 7, 1941 — April 12, 2023

Joyce Buckles McLaughlin, of Charleston, entered into eternal rest on April 12, 2023 at The Roper Hospice Cottage.

Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 5 St. Teresa Dr., Charleston. The Rite of Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends between 5:00 and 7:00 PM Monday afternoon at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy., Charleston.

Joyce was born in Kingstree, SC on March 7, 1941, the baby of Ernest and Ozelia Buckles. She graduated from Kingstree High School, went to college and later moved to Charleston and began to work at C&S Bank. It was there where she met the love of her life Bernard McLaughlin. When Joyce and Bernard started a family, she began her career as a stay at home mom and homemaker. She was an active volunteer at Blessed Sacrament Catholic School where she served as the PTO president, school athletic director and coach. She was also a girl scout leader, room mom and a Thursday hotdog lady. She later served lunches to the teachers and staff at BEHS monthly, continuing to volunteer as her children grew older. Her volunteer efforts never took her away from attending her children’s events and later her grandchildren’s events. When physical limitations made it harder for her to attend, she always made sure to ask how everything went and would delight in seeing pictures. Joyce also met her lifelong friends through volunteering. The famous Hotdog ladies that began together at Blessed Sacrament continued to meet on Thursdays and were together hosting many bridal and baby showers for the Beenie Weenies, as well as supporting each other through life’s ups and downs. Joyce loved her family and enjoyed having Sunday suppers and Wednesday spaghetti dinners. She delighted in having her grandchildren for sleepovers, adventures, shopping trips and crafts and they loved being with their Mamoo. Joyce loved arts and crafts, especially ceramics and she shared her talents with her children and grands. She was always ready to teach a lesson.

Joyce is survived by her children, Daria McLaughlin Tompkins (Tommy), Joseph Francis McLaughlin II; her grandchildren, Joseph Tompkins (Rae), Jacob McLaughlin and Darby Tompkins; her two great-grands, Sullivan and Michael Tompkins. She is also survived by a sister, Ilene Buckles. Joyce is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bernard McLaughlin; brothers, Ernest Buckles, Jr (Lena Mae), Dickie Buckles, Harold Buckles, Jack Buckles, Pete Buckles and sister, Louise Huffsettler (Tiger).

The family would like to thank Miss Dora for her care and companionship for the last few years.
