Joseph Roper, Sr., 89, of James Island, husband of Maggie M. Roper died Thursday, October 28, 2010, at his residence. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, November 3, 2010, at 1 PM, at the James Island Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Charleston. Friends may call at the family home, 1509 Rainbow Rd. Charleston, SC 29412, from 12 Noon until 10 PM. Joseph, son of the late Harry and Elvira Whaley Roper, was born September 22, 1921, in James Island, South Carolina. He graduated from James Island Presbyterian School. He served his country in Europe during World War II from 1942-1945. After his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, he returned to Charleston where he met and married Maggie in 1947. He retired from the Naval Weapons Station in 1983 after working as a mechanical technician for many years. Surviving in addition to his wife are: his children, Lois Fields (Richard, d.), Frances Lewis, Joseph Roper, Jr. (Hilda, d.), Edward Roper (Barbara), Deborah Brown (Alfred), Victor Roper (Theresa) and Oveta Gilliard (niece), all of Charleston; his siblings, Alvin Richardson(Evelina) and Nancy Washington (George) ; his in-laws Hezekiah Brown, Elizabeth Roper and Nancy Brisbane; eighteen grandchildren, 40 great-grand children, and 10 great-great-grand children. He was preceded in death by his siblings Sarah Roper, Margaret Wilder, Hermina Roper, Bernice Galliard, and Henry Roper. He had a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. Special family friends include Talibah Al-Muid, Shirley Williams, Alyce Ancrum, Emma Sutherland, Telicia Mack, Alicia Grant, Wylean Brown, and Sara Flynn.
